The Office Manager Is Doing HR

Somewhere between 15 and 150 employees. HR is whoever got stuck with it. It works until it doesn’t, and when it doesn’t, it’s expensive. Fractional HR gets you a real HR lead at a fraction of a salary.

Growing into new states

Payroll And Leave Laws Just Got Complicated

You hired in Tennessee, then Ohio, then someone remote in California. Every state has its own rules on pay frequency, leave, and final paychecks. We deal with this across fifteen-plus states already.

Something came up

A Complaint, A Charge, Or A Hard Termination

An employee complaint, an agency charge, a termination you want done right. You need someone who has handled it before, this week, not a retainer with a law firm for every question.

What’s Included

What A Fractional HR
Engagement Covers

Scope is set on the first call and written down. This is the usual list. Take what you need.

  • Compliance calendarPostings, filings, training deadlines, and I-9 audits on a schedule, not when someone remembers.
  • Employee relationsComplaints, conflicts, accommodations, and the conversations managers put off.
  • InvestigationsDocumented, consistent, and finished. We have run them and we have defended them.
  • Hiring & onboardingOffer letters, background checks, e-sign paperwork, first-day setup. Recruiting too, if you want it.
  • Terminations & offboardingDone cleanly, with the documentation that protects you afterward.
  • Payroll & benefitsMulti-state payroll, tax filings, open enrollment, workers’ comp, and unemployment claims.
  • Manager coachingYour supervisors get someone to call before they say the wrong thing.
1

Scoping Call

Fifteen minutes. Headcount, states, what’s keeping you up at night. You get a firm number after it.

2

Audit

We go through what you have. Handbook, files, payroll setup, postings. You get a plain-language list of gaps.

3

Fix & Set Up

The gaps get closed first. Then we set the cadence: who you call, how often we’re on site, what we own.

4

Run It

Month to month from there. Scale up when you hire, scale down when things are quiet.

Pricing

A Fraction Of A Salary.
Month To Month.

Fractional HR is priced as a monthly retainer scoped to your headcount and how much you want us to own. Consulting projects are quoted flat. No long-term contract either way.

How a quote works

One fifteen-minute call is enough to give you a number in writing. Nothing is signed before you have it, and you can stop any month.

Common Questions

Fractional HR, Explained

What is fractional HR?

A senior HR professional who works for your company part of the time instead of full time. You get the experience of an HR director or manager, on a monthly retainer, for a set number of days or hours. It’s the same idea as a fractional CFO.

How is this different from a PEO?

A PEO becomes the employer of record for your staff and bundles payroll, benefits, and HR into one per-employee fee. With fractional HR and ASO, you stay the employer. You keep your own benefits plans and your own company structure; we run the HR and administration behind it. For many companies in the 15 to 150 range, that’s the better fit, and it’s easier to leave if your needs change.

Do you work on site or remote?

Both. Most engagements are a mix: scheduled days on site for the things that need a person in the room, remote for everything else. We are based in Troy, Michigan and Franklin, Tennessee and support employers across the country.

What if we already have someone in HR?

Then we back them up. Plenty of companies have one HR generalist who is great but stretched thin. We take the compliance, the investigations, and the multi-state payroll off their plate, or we step in as the senior person they can escalate to.

Can you also recruit for us?

Yes. Spark Companies is five specialist staffing firms, so hiring is where we started. If you want recruiting and HR from the same people, that’s the whole point of how we’re set up.
